Art and Religion explores the relationship between religion, architecture, and the visual arts within Christianity and other major religious traditions. It identifies and describes the main historical, theological, sociological, and aesthetic dimensions of religious art and architecture, with particular attention to popular as well as high culture. We will focus on four chief dimensions where religious art and religious belief converge: the iconographic, the didactic, the institutional, and the aesthetic. Readings from sources contemporary with the works of art will add a more textured historical background to our observations. Art and architecture will be observed not simply as reflections of dominant religious beliefs, but also as instrumental in formulating those beliefs and rituals.
