Media Manipulation: Frauds, Hoaxes, and Fakes

This course looks at how social media, digital technology, a resurgent populism and severe polarization in American life have created an environment for manipulators to infiltrate the nation’s information flow and influence public opinion. 

During the semester we will examine government and media investigations begun in 2017 of the manipulation of various sources of media by foreign agents, trolls and political advocacy groups. We will look at these investigations in context of earlier campaigns to manipulate opinion outside the Untied States to achieve foreign policy and strategic ends.  The course will also study new digital strategies by political groups to influence pubic opinion to achieve political ends in the U.S.
