The goal of this course is to build on LASAL Scholars’ prior knowledge of the history of the Mississippi River, and its significant role in the State’s wetlands loss, history, culture, and politics. The specific focus of this class will be on the development of the river as an economic engine and resource for the state and region, and how this development has shaped the culture and history of Louisiana. Our investigation will be framed by man’s desire to manage and to control the natural environment for gain.
